Double XP for Horde This Weekend in Gears 2

Here is the link with info from Epic Games forums.

Revives are double points in all game types
Wingman is double normal XP (4x XP)
Horde is double XP

I wish I could get any XP at all in adversarial modes in Gears, but I can’t flop and shotty as well that community.  I will be tearing it up this weekend in Horde.  I like the added incentive to revive.  I have some people on my FL that I will be sure to mention that to if I Horde with them this weekend.

New Ghost Recon is Officially Announced

2010 February 9

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

According to the article they are giving Beta access to anyone who buys Splinter Cell: Conviction.

The game will be coming out this holiday season.  It will severely test my conviction on only purchasing one new game this year ( Halo: Reach).

There is no word yet whether it plays at all like MW2.  The fact that it was not mentioned in the release leads me to believe that Ubisoft is not taking up the EA 2010 platform.

EA is a SWF

2010 February 8

EA is a SWF. ( Link for those unfamiliar with the film)

EA is obsessed with Modern Warfare 2 (MW2). I understand why they would seek to compare the Medal of Honor(MoH) relaunch to the uber popular FPS. They are in the same wheelhouse and they want to drag whatever fans of MW2 over to MoH this fall. That would be fine. But like any good stalker, EA kept pushing.

EA then laid down the gauntlet on MW2 for the upcoming Battlefield Bad Company (BFBC2).

“The first [Bad Company] did very well in its first outing,” he said. “The next one is a heck of a lot better and it looks like a worthy competitor to Modern Warfare.”

~ EA boss John Riccitiello

This seemed unnecessary to me. Bad Company 1 sold very well. It is popular. It has its own fan base. While it’s set in the same era as MW2 and also a FPS, I feel they are two different games in how they play. The attempt to marry being a fan of one to the other seems very desperate to me. Don’t change your hair color and style John, they looked fine to me the way they were.

BFBC2 is a squad based shooter. In my limited experience with the demo and prior Battlefield games, lone wolves cannot dominate as they can in MW2. Harrier, AC130, rinse, and repeat need not apply.

The vehicles in BFBC2 help make the game a different animal. The destructible environments make camping harder. I am not saying it is better, but it is clearly different. There is no need to invoke MW2 when discussing the game unless they are talking about the units they want to move. Even those would be some lofty and unrealistic dreams.

Not satisfied to being stuck at above average stalker, EA dove in hip deep today. Their adherence to talking points no matter the relevance puts Fox News to shame. EA is now invoking MW2 while discussing Dead Space 2. It is now a space based survival, ahem sorry, space based action (JUST LIKE MW2!) horror property.

This is hitting some scary levels in trying to fit square pegs into round holes. What is next? FIFA 11 starring the long-lost cousin of Soap MacTavish on the cover?

If EA wants to try to market games so that people will see them as the same as the big dog in town, how about choosing one game (Medal of Honor) as that dog in the fight? Let Battlefield: Bad Company 2 be what it is: an alternative to MW2. And please let Dead Space 2 be its own game.

If they keep along this road, all properties they compare to MW2 are likely to come off as “kind of like MW2, just not as good” to the masses. Others will come off desperate, like the Dead Space 2 one. EA, let your games be themselves.

Say No to “The Mullet”

Doritos is sponsoring a vote at http://doritoschangethegame.com/index.html. This link takes a while to load, at least on my end.

An EASports link with more details is here.  The choices are between Drew Brees, Reggie Wayne and the Mullet aka Jared Allen.

I know it has been a long while since there was a solo defensive player on the cover of Madden (2005, Ray Lewis). It is long overdue, and it would be great if the focus were on defense in Madden NFL 11. That being said, please do not vote for Jared Allen for the cover of Madden NFL 11.

I am backing Brees.  I think he has a better shot at Wayne to keep the cover of Madden NFL 11 mullet free.  I am on the fence buying the game. But I still want my voice heard.  There is no need for my kids to have to look at that hideous hair style throughout the inevitable summer media blitz.

It will be bad enough that there could  be a “Cool Ranch Doritos – Cool Customer of the Game” in game advert in Madden 11’s future.  It does not need to be saddled with Brett Favre’s personal handwarmer.

Get Your Shovel Out

2010 February 4

Here we go again, the first Madden NFL 10 11 blog will debut during halftime of the Super Bowl. What bull $hit will they throw at us this year?

That may seem a little harsh, as Carl Spackler once opined. I can’t help but think of Madden NFL 10’s build up blogs from last year and feel disappointed. Many of the improvements ( WR/DB interaction, pushing the pocket) just did not show up enough to warrant the hype they received in these blogs.

I still feel I got good value (having played it 82 days as of this post), but the game play lacks in too many areas they claimed would be addressed via last year’s blogs for me to feel satisfied.

Along with the above issues, flats coverage was a disaster for far too long. It took five months for them to address this core issue? Teams could toss the ball to their back at will and gain plus yardage. It almost ruined the game for me. All strategy and play calling could be rendered moot by a quick pass to the half back in the flat. This hearkens back to Madden 95. That is not a compliment.

TTIG Madden NFL 10 Online Franchise – Year 2 Recap

2010 February 3
by niennumb

The TTIG Madden NFL 10 Franchise year 2 ended earlier this month with the Super Bowl victory by the Kansas City Chiefs, who were led by your truly. The Chiefs won a back and forth contest with Mo Moss’ beloved Vikings.  The final score was 31-28. Adrian Peterson could not be stopped as he ran for over 280 yards.  In the end it was an untested Matt Cassel who led the Chiefs down the field with under two minutes to play to bring the title back to ” The Paris of the Plains”.

All eight human squads made the playoffs this time around.  Thanks to all participants in the Online Franchise.  It disbanded in early January due to the deluge of new games that all league owners had from the holidays.

Time’s a Wastin’

2010 February 2

31,350 minutes ( and 19 seconds), How do you measure, wasted time?

Time counters in video games, what were these developers thinking? I know that I waste an inordinate amount of time gaming, I don’t need an exact number. The plausible deniability of an abstract amount of time allows me to sleep at night, well as much as I can given my schedule.

Back in 2003, EA had a time counter on Madden 2004 via your EA profile. It was the worst thing they ever did. It would’ve stopped me from playing had I not been so addicted to it at the time. What it did was scar me forever. Six years later I can still remember seeing 2 weeks, 4 days and 20 hours burned into the CRT. It was, and is, a large part of my Scarlet Number. It is something that I know on my death bed I will think about. It will be ” Are you there God, its me, Nien. Can I have back my 2 weeks, 4 days and 20 hours?”

This leads me to my love/hate affair with Modern Warfare 1 & 2 in particular. CoD4 (aka MW1) was the return of the timer( at least in my experience). There were and are a host of other issues that I have with both games ( I find them unbalanced, they reward great players by making them greater artificially), but the time counter did it for me. It was and is, the straw that has broken both the camels’ backs. I can handle getting pWn3d. Here is my Bungie.net profile as proof. What I cannot handle is getting owned and knowing the exact amount of time I am wasting doing so.

I do enjoy the voyeurism that the feature allows for looking at other people’s wasted time though. There are times when I look at it amazement. These are people with full time jobs during the day and real work when they get home, raising kids. I can understand how college kids on break burn through 24 hours of MW2 gaming in a 168 hour week and not miss anything, but people with full time jobs doing the same in their part time job of MW2? Crazy. Someone has to be addicted to five hour energy. Either that or they have a Lazarus Pit somewhere. If so, please let me know, I could use one.

Site to Relaunch on February 2nd

2010 January 13
by niennumb

Holiday Craziness led to a dearth of posting.  The site kind of became a news feed from other sites which is not exactly what I was planning on at launch.

Right now I am going through an evaluation process to get it back on the rails.  We plan on offering more commentary and original media as soon as we pop out of the ground on the 2nd.

The Impressive Cast of Mass Effect 2

2009 December 11
by Adam Lockhart

Recent developments have bumped up Mass Effect 2 to the top of my “Most Anticipated” list. From the announcement of the game being 2 discs, to the new character classes, the game is shaping up well.
Now add an “A” list of Sci-Fi and nerd starsincluding one of my faves Chuck) to the voice work and you can see that Bioware is really raising the bar…again.

Saturday is a Big One

2009 December 7

The Video Game Awards are Saturday Night and like Judge Smales, I cannot wait.  I could care less about the awards themselves.  They are arbitrary fanboy stuff and I cannot bother to get involved in such things.

What I cannot wait for are the video reveals, specifically Halo:Reach and the new as-yet unnamed Star Wars property.

Halo:Reach is a no brainer for me.  I cannot wait to get some more information on it.  Bungie.net announced on the weekly update this past weekend that what we will see is 2 1/2 minutes from the opening cinematic.  I wish it was game play, but I will take what I can get.

The Star Wars property better be Battlefront III….or I will cry.  Not really.  I am astounded by the amount of people that want it to be another KOTOR.  Did you not learn from the “The Sith Lords?” read more…
